NIGHT – #1

I want to start sitting on my porch at night, observing. I figured, I would time myself – five minutes (got a stopwatch). I would let myself open up, and see what happens.

Tonight, I was a little nervous. My neighborhood is quiet, but there is a neighbor across the street, three lots down, whose door is directly opposite mine. I saw him inside, then he stepped outside. He disappeared for a moment, then I saw a bright spot, i.e., he lit a cigarette. Then he went to the porch railing and looked out. I think he saw me.

I then ignored him. I wasn’t sitting outside, looking for humans…

My feet were bare. I felt a breeze, air moving, across the lawn, across my feet, a cooler stream of air. To my left, the huge bushes, trees, next to my front window, loomed at me. The street light was just behind them … My neck hurts so I didn’t stare at them long, i.e., turn my head to the left.

I smelled dogfood. That was weird, since no one is allowed to have a dog here. If someone has a dog they keep it inside all the time! That smell, however, disappeared after a few seconds.

This was at 11:30 p.m. There were NO bird sounds.

The neighbor, on my side of the street, two lots down, has a beautiful flower garden. He has flowers that grow like poles. He’s always out in this garden, tending to his plants.

At night, in the glow of the street light, those flowers looked … a little eerie.

The sky was clear, but not clear. I always find that WEIRD. There were no clouds, but I know there was SOMETHING “in the way”, because the stars were not distinctive. Other nights, I can see the stars quite well. Not tonight. It took me a minute to realize that the BIG Dipper was overhead.

Then I heard a train going by, on the track that’s a few hundred yards from the park.

I found that soothing. I like listening to the train, and feel myself going with that train, where ever it is going.

I saw a flickers of light, here and there, where there were no lights, just darkness. That I found peculiar. I’m going to see if that happens again, when I sit on my porch, tomorrow night.

Across the street, I saw that the resident’s car had two shadows – one of the body of the car, and the other, a darker shadow, just of the hood.

Now that I LIKE. Why does that happen? I have a windowpane (the one to the left) in the front of the house, that distorts the streetlights. At least I think it does! Sometimes, I see “two” streetlights, when I KNOW there is only one!

Things just look different at night.

Mostly, I sat [on my porch tonight] and tried to feel the night, tried to let my eyes go out of focus. I want to feel the night. I need to try more of that, tomorrow.

Later!

:-)
